Heather Washington, Producer and SVP, on Choosing Joy, Self-Care, Balancing Work & Mom Life & More
I'm learning a lot about trusting God.
Happy Wednesday,
Heather Washington is a star, a trailblazer, and a talented artist, creating a path for more meaningful, romantic, and timeless Black stories. Washington is a mother, Producer and Senior Vice President of Development for Motion Pictures at Westbrook Studios. Not only is she telling compelling stories, walking in her purpose. She is focused on creating joy in everyday life, building a legacy that will inspire her children, and opening doors so other Black creators can do the same.
I was fortunately matched with Heather for a mentoring pilot program while at Westbrook, little did she know I hoped she would be my mentor. Women like Heather inspire me to have continuous faith in my gifts and this ever-evolving entertainment industry and the ups and downs that come with it. Today I am happy to give Heather her flowers, and all of the mothers who live and sacrifice so that their garden can keep growing.
Born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, around her loving parents and beautiful sisters, Washington decided to attend the illustrious Howard University for undergraduate studies and the University of Pennsylvania Law School. After law school, she moved back to her hometown Atlanta to practice corporate law, where she represented banks and private equity firms. After doing this for three years, she decided to focus on what she loved.
“Working professionally, you work long hours, so you need to love what you do. Soul searching helped me realize that I always enjoyed going to the movies with my family growing up and it was something that still brought me joy. I enjoy reading, storytelling and producing a movie from beginning to end. I love the collaborative process of finding a good script or idea, attaching a director and actors and setting it up at a studio,” she says.
Growing up, Washington was a bookworm and a perfect weekend called for watching movies and tucking away to read a book from cover to cover. Ultimately moving to California and getting her first job in the film industry in the Universal Pictures Leadership Program, a studio executive training program.
“I was blessed to be accepted into this program which launched my career in the business and exposed me to valuable learning and networking opportunities,” she adds. “I love reading books because they allow you to dive deep and get a full expanse of knowledge on a particular topic. And it doesn't have to stop when you graduate college. We ought to continue learning new things. And it doesn't even have to be related to your career. Lately, I've been focused on reading books about self-care. It's something that I need to do actively. And so, why not read books about it? Why not learn about different methods of self-care?”
I went into this interview inspired by Heather’s poise, grace, joy, and resilience and I left even more inspired by her journey and encouraged to romanticize my life and invest in my wants and needs and desires. It is so easy to stumble along our journey questioning each experience but sitting down with Heather was a gentle reminder to trust and enjoy the process! This a soft reminder to be light in every season and celebrate every win.
Do you romanticize your life?
“I do. I love to romanticize my life. I love to capture moments. I love to take pictures. I love to do interesting things and have pictures to remember on days when I'm feeling low,” Heather says. “I love making experiences feel elevated. Even if it's a regular thing like meeting girlfriends for brunch, I like to put together a cute outfit so I feel good about myself. We sometimes tend to save our special outfits for special events, but I love wearing them on ordinary days too. I love going to the beach and having a picnic or taking a trip somewhere new. All of these experiences can feel magical if you put in the effort.”
I am wishing you more magic this season. More beauty, more peace, and positive affirmations that you are on the right path as we enter June, July, and August. There are so many extraordinary moments coming our way! Speaking of magic this, Better than Carbone Spicy Rigatoni with a Garlic Confit Candle pasta by Chef Theresa is a dream come true. I made this meal for my mother and have added it as a part of my favorite weekly dinner meals. I love when Cay creates a new recipe and this Sangria recipe will not disappoint! Sangria is perfect for a date night or when you want to cozy up alone with a book.
