Happy Sunday,
I am proud to be a woman, but most importantly, a black woman. I find it no coincidence that women's history month falls during Spring, a time where we begin again and reinvigorate after cold winter months. When we think about the women in our lives, aren't they like Spring? Warm. Overflowing. Spreading seeds of love. Birthing new beginnings. We all have gifts like seeds ready to take root, but the women in my life have taught me to nourish myself for the seeds to flourish. So we appreciate the celebrations that take place this month, but we all know that without women in the world, we wouldn't have anything to celebrate. Here's to honoring us always and forever.
Today, I am delighted to honor a beautiful black woman, Kayla Salisbury-Glaspie, the talented illustrator behind Sunday Forever. I was first inspired by her captivating artwork, colorful images, adoration for Black culture, and experience. Her work introduces a dance between conceptual art, lively realism portraits, and folk art style caricatures inspired by stories, themes, conversations, and neighborhood icons found in the heart of South Central. I am so thankful that our stars were aligned; from our first conversation, I just knew that we were creating a project that would be personal and important. A celebration of black bodies. Kayla just gets it. She has a B.F.A in Illustration with a minor in Social Impact Design from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena and a MAED in Art from the University of Phoenix. A native of South Central, Kayla also organizes community outreach and programming. She has since created Coloured Art Studio Nonprofit, which is focused on bringing access to an enriched Black and Brown-centered Arts Education program to South Central youth.
I love that Kayla finds joy in love, love for God, her husband, community, painting in her studio every day, creating new artwork, the smell of canvas, and brush soap. Basking in the little moments is what I am most excited to find bliss in this year. Currently, I find joy in resting this season, longer naps, and in this warm weather. Getting to know myself, my family, and my friends deeper. How will you find more joy this Spring?
I find joy in the support and love my friends have for me. Their contributions to Sunday Forever bring me so much happiness. So each Sunday Forever recipes by Flavor of Fox and Cay are special to me, and these women are killing it in their own lanes! I am so encouraged to make unique and tasty meals at home. I admit that I didn't enjoy cooking or creating my own cocktails before trying their recipes. Cooking luxurious seafood and cocktail recipes at home was intimidating and time-consuming, but I love trying new recipes at home because of their light directions. I hope you will treat yourself to March's recipe Crawfish Bread. Each Flavor of Fox recipe makes me feel like I'm in New Orleans living my best life. I am so proud that Flavor of Fox is growing, and I am secretly waiting for her following recipe, hoping that I take the time and attention to cook as well as she does. Cay's Strawberry Lemonade Margarita is fun, sweet, and flirty! I am excited to add this margarita to my favorite drinks as we approach Spring! Her drinks feel like warm weather in a cup!
How have you evolved this year? When I asked Kayla, she said, "I feel like I've turned into a completely different person, and I am so very proud. I am stronger, wiser, more peaceful, and more in love with myself and the things around me. I am grateful for where I've been and what I've survived, but I look less behind me and more excitedly eager for what is to come."
So to all you beautiful women, let's walk into this new season with ease. Spreading. Letting go. Spring is a marvelous time for rebirth.
