I have always loved Nia Long. The women of the ’90s are timeless reminders of how lucky we are to age, grow even more radiant, and embody who we were meant to be. So many beautiful women are setting the tone for what it means to age and love every decade.
When Nia received her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, she said:
“I truly understand that God made a promise over my life long before I was old enough to understand it. Everything I have accomplished has been inside of that promise.”
Her words gave me hope. We are living in a promise, even when some of those promises have yet to manifest. I’m sure we’re all learning how to wait well. We remember the promises that we made to ourselves. In August, mine was peace, and in September, it’s been patience.
I had a beautiful Saturday in Dallas with family and friends, seeing familiar faces and meeting new people. I’ve spent so much time away from Dallas recently, and it filled my cup. I love those sweet reminders that I’m loved on every coast. A friend and I were laughing about how, since we’ve been back freelancing, we have been blessed to make it work these past months. We’ve still had the privilege of sharing joy, sharing happiness, and overflowing with good times.
So this Sunday feels like a beautiful day to rest and reflect. I try to attend Friendship-West in person, but today I was bedside at Baptist, watching from the sanctuary of my own apartment. I have the pleasure of not having to move from this couch, and I’m grateful to relax and take care of myself. The sun is shining in Dallas, and I’m happy to squeeze in a few more pool days.
This summer allowed me to spread my wings. I spent time with friends who live far away, flirted with the possibility of moving again, and enjoyed soft days and slow days. I began mentoring with Girls Write Now, where my mentee and I would start our writing sessions with “I am” affirmations. I also started a 75-day writing challenge, was selected for a Scriptwriters Incubator Program, and worked on my first commercial. I’m grateful for all of it as I grow toward becoming the screenwriter and performer of my dreams.
My best friend Phoenix calls this time in our lives decorating ourselves, and I love that. We get to add more beauty to our lives while trusting that one day the seeds we’ve planted will bloom. We have to keep planting and watering, keep celebrating, praying, and asking. I’ve filled my third prayer jar, and I’m waiting for those prayers to come true.
This morning, a friend spoke so much life into me. She told me she loves how focused I’ve been on my writing workshops and classes. It reminded me how good it feels to tell each other when we see something beautiful growing. This fall, I hope we keep making time for ourselves and spread that kind of joy. Tell someone they look amazing. Speak sweet words. Share our happiness.
I am obsessed with going slow lately. I hope you take your sweet time, too. Be exactly where your feet are planted. Be careful with what you carry and where you put your attention and energy. Trust the slowness and goodness that come with becoming more obsessed with your life.
I’m looking forward to my softest season ever, and as I prepare for mine, it’ll be nice seeing you win, too. I love the idea of flirting with new possibilities: flirting with being seen, falling in love, and outgrowing environments that no longer serve us. There is so much power in smiling, laughter, prayer, and the seasons changing.
Believe this is the year of the best-case scenario. We are all authors of our own lives. What will you call this new chapter?
